However, when it was discovered that Women’s breast actually came both bigger and smaller than this then they needed to add a size either side of this scale. Hence the DD and AA. AA is smaller than an A cup, but DD is bigger than a D cup. We’ve come a long way since then as women’s cup sizes go wayyyy beyond even a DD now. However, this initial sizing grade has remained. It’s why the UK now have both single letters followed by double letters when the cups sizes increase, and the US have D, DD, DDD and even DDDD!
