The Mother of God of Vladimir is one of the most universally beloved Orthodox icons. Through this icon, the Mother of God revealed her Holy Protection over the Russian land. The original icon is displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. Patriarch Luke Chrysoberges of Constantinople sent the newly made icon as a gift to Grand Duke Yury Dolgoruky of Kiev in about 1131. One of the most exquisite icons ever created, the icon of the Theotokos of Vladimir is sometimes described as exhibiting universal feelings of motherly love and anxiety for her child. The venerated image was used in coronations of tsars, elections of patriarchs, and other important ceremonies of state. Her feast is celebrated on June 3rd (O.S.).
