Have you ever noticed how you receive a lot of compliments when you wear a red saree or a red dress? Sometimes, we opt for a red outfit to make a statement at a wedding or an event. This is probably due to societal conditioning that associates red with desire and attraction. In fact, a lot of people tend to assume that women wear red to attract men. While there’s no theory or data to support this, a study by the City University of New York found that women wearing red were seen to be more attractive to men.In the European Journal of Social Psychology, lead author Steven G Young wrote, “Recent evidence suggests that coloration may serve a purpose in human mating, as female sexual excitement is associated with reddening of the cheeks, neck, and chest. Women are more likely to wear red than other colours when they anticipate meeting attractive, but not unattractive, men. Heterosexual men are sensitive to red coloration on women. Compared with a range of other colours, women viewed on red backgrounds or wearing red clothing are found more attractive.”He also added, “Even when women are viewed merely carrying red objects (e.g., laptop computers), they are found more attractive than when holding comparable objects in different colors. In two experiments, red enhanced men’s ratings of female attractiveness, but only for faces pre-rated as attractive; red had no influence on perceptions of initially unattractive faces.”Another study conducted by Daniela Niesta Kayser of the University of Potsdam in Germany, along with collaborators in Munich and the U.S., showed that women were more likely to wear red if they knew they were about to meet an attractive men. Kayser invited two sets of women to a lab for a psychology experiment. They included a picture of the researcher who would be undertaking the experiment so that the women can identify him at the lab. These pictures were of two men who were judged for their attractiveness by another set of women. So while one was rated 6.9 out of 9 (attractive), the other received 3.9 (not so attractive). So Kayser sent one picture to the first group and the other to the second group.Upon arriving at the lab, the participants learned that the said researcher wasn’t available and their fill-in took a full body picture of the volunteers. These pictures were studied to identify items of clothing that were red in colour, from dresses to accessories. It was found that 57 per cent of the women who were expected to meet the attractive man wore red, but among the group that was supposed to meet the unattractive man, only 16 per cent women wore red. This clearly shows that wearing red makes a woman appear attractive. Now that you have the data to back this psychological effect, go wear that red dress to your first date!
